What is a stopwatch?

A stopwatch is a timekeeping instrument that measures elapsed time between two events, counting upward from zero. Unlike a clock, which shows the current time in a time zone, a stopwatch measures intervals: seconds, minutes and hours from when you press start until you press stop.

A stopwatch has 3 fundamental parts: a measurement mechanism (quartz oscillator in digital ones, spiral spring in mechanical ones), user controls (start, pause and reset button), and a display or dial showing elapsed time.

How a stopwatch works

How a stopwatch works

A stopwatch works by counting oscillations from a stable time source and converting that count into readable units: seconds, hundredths and milliseconds. The process has 4 phases:

In an online digital stopwatch, the time source is the browser's monotonic clock (performance.now()). This clock only advances forward and is unaffected by system date adjustments or time-server synchronisations. Real resolution is limited by browser security to a few tenths of a millisecond in Chrome and around 1 ms in Firefox and Safari.

The dominant measurement error is not the browser. Human reaction time when pressing start or lap is 200 to 300 milliseconds (0.2 to 0.3 s), an order of magnitude larger than any clock imprecision. For measurements where that matters, the solution is to combine this stopwatch with photocells or sensors, not with another stopwatch.

Laps and split times: what's the difference

A split measures the segment between 2 consecutive laps; the cumulative measures total time since the stopwatch started. This distinction causes confusion because many stopwatches show only one of the two values. This online stopwatch with laps shows both in two columns, to eliminate mental subtraction.

Is an online stopwatch accurate?
Yes, with a resolution in the order of one millisecond (1 ms). This online stopwatch uses the browser's high-resolution monotonic clock (performance.now()), a clock that only advances forward and is not affected by date adjustments or network synchronisations. On a current computer or mobile device, the real resolution is 1 ms or better. The factor dominating measurement error is not the browser but human reaction time when pressing the buttons: between 200 and 300 milliseconds (0.2 to 0.3 s).
Does the stopwatch work if I switch tabs or lock my phone?
Yes, the stopwatch keeps measuring accurately. The measurement does not depend on an internal tick that could slow down. Every time the tab becomes visible again, elapsed time is calculated from real timestamps of the monotonic clock. The browser may throttle background animations, but the stopwatch maintains its accuracy when you return.
Are my times lost if I reload the page?
No, times are preserved. The stopwatch state and all laps are saved in your device's localStorage. When you reload the page, everything is automatically restored. A running stopwatch continues counting from the correct moment. Sessions saved more than 24 hours ago are restored paused for safety.
Can I use it offline?
Yes, it works offline. After the first visit, the stopwatch is cached as a progressive web app (PWA). You can install it from the browser menu and use it without an internet connection. The only function that requires a connection is the share link feature.
How do I go full screen?
Press the Full screen button in the utilities row, or the F key. On devices where the native API is not available, such as iPhone and iPad, a CSS immersive mode is activated that hides the rest of the interface. Exit with Esc or the same button.
Can I export or share my times?
Yes, in 3 different ways. Copy puts a plain-text table on the clipboard, ideal for pasting into WhatsApp or email. CSV downloads a file that opens directly in Excel or LibreOffice. Share link creates a URL encoding all laps: whoever opens it will see your times.
Are my data saved on any server?
No, no data leaves your device. The entire stopwatch runs in your browser. Times are saved only in your device's localStorage, nothing is sent to any server, and we do not use tracking cookies. The only moment information leaves is when you generate a share link.
How many laps can I record?
No practical limit. The table stays fluid up to several thousand laps. To avoid saturating the DOM, the most recent laps are shown on screen, while the CSV export includes all of them. For long races or training with many repetitions, there is no restriction.
What is the difference between a lap and a split time?
The split measures the segment between two consecutive laps; the cumulative measures total time from the start. When you press Lap, the table records both values. Example: laps of 4.00 s, 3.98 s and 4.12 s generate cumulatives of 4.00 s, 7.98 s and 12.10 s.
Can it be used with a screen reader?
Yes, it is compatible with screen readers. The stopwatch announces important events (start, pause, each lap, reset) in natural language. The laps table uses semantic markup. All controls are keyboard-operable and have aria-label attributes. The A key announces the current time at any moment.
How does a digital stopwatch work?
A digital stopwatch works with a quartz crystal oscillator vibrating at a constant frequency of 32,768 Hz. An integrated circuit counts those vibrations and converts them into time units: seconds, hundredths and milliseconds. Each press of the start, pause or lap button records an oscillator timestamp. How does an analogue or mechanical stopwatch work?
An analogue or mechanical stopwatch works with a spiral mainspring (coil spring) that stores energy when wound.
